Federal withholding uses the official 2026 IRS Publication 15-T Percentage Method tables. Supports both 2019-and-earlier W-4 (allowance-based) and 2020+ W-4 (Steps 2–4). Federal withholding allowance: $4,300. Social Security wage base: $176,100.
National withholding uses an estimated rate. For precise calculations, consult your state’s withholding tables or a qualified payroll professional.
The IRS redesigned Form W-4 in 2020, eliminating allowances and replacing them with five steps: filing status, a multiple-jobs checkbox, dependent credits, other adjustments (income/deductions/extra withholding). Employees hired before 2020 may still have an old W-4 on file — employers must honor it until the employee submits a new one.
Checking Step 2 tells the employer to use narrower IRS bracket tables — the ones designed for households with multiple incomes. This results in more withholding per paycheck and prevents the family from owing tax at filing. Employees should check it if they hold two jobs simultaneously or are MFJ with a working spouse.
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming impose no state income tax on wages. Employees in these states only pay federal income tax and FICA.
The 2026 Social Security wage base is $176,100. Employees pay 6.2% on wages up to this limit. Medicare tax of 1.45% applies to all wages, plus a 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on wages over $200,000.
Hawaii’s state withholding form HW-4 includes two exempt statuses: Certified Disabled Person and Nonresident Military Spouse. Employees who qualify for these statuses are not subject to Hawaii state income tax withholding. Select the appropriate status and the calculator will show $0 state withholding.
